Homesteading Part Two

Everybody thinks of changing humanity & nobody thinks of changing himself
– Leo Tolstoy
So what does it mean to fully love and express who you are? How often do we live by ingrained expectations rather than discovering who we are and what we are here to give?
I too have lived a borrowed life. By that I mean I have tried to do what other’s told me I should do. I have set aside my own passions for fear of being wrong or thinking that someone outside of me had a better idea of me. I have tried to “get” love, affection and attention by doing things that other’s thought I should be doing, never mind that they would never do what they counseled themselves.
In listening to Andre Agassi, in his 60 Minute interview; I was struck by his unhappiness of living a gift, a talent, as an expectation and later living the same gift, tennis, from his own choice. In the former, he actually hated the game of tennis and in the later he developed his own talent from an inside passion. In changing his perspective and expectation he allowed tennis to vault him into his true passion of providing students with the tools of success – an education.
Part of the Cowgirl journey is claiming your own inner landscape. It is claiming only your ideas, thoughts and expectations for your own life. It is about creating the inner boundaries that allow others to have opinions, stories, beliefs and expectations on their side of the fence. It is not about changing others – parents, friends, lovers…- it is about changing how we respond to other people’s ideas for our lives.
And living from the inside out can be scary. It can mean changing who we spend time with. It can mean not spending as much time with family. It can mean distance until we have found our way and are ready to be seen and experienced from our internal certainty and clarity of who we really are.
Is it worth it? My answer is YES. I can’t speak for you, but what I do know is that when I have aligned with my own soul, I have found internal peace. And for me, that peace is worth more than someone else’s idea of me, in fact that peace feeds my soul and my creativity.
The outcome of living my life from the inside out has been the new friends that have shown up to support and love me for my authenticity.
If you have been living a borrowed life, I can tell you it is worth the effort to discover what your soul wants to express and experience in this life time. Sometimes it means pulling on your worthy boots along with your big girl panties and taking a stand for yourself. It also means discovering a joy and peace that is the by product of the journey….. All I can say is head to your heart.. your true heart and listen… are you being called to claim and homestead your inner landscape?
Happy trails,
